OK, so it's been what, two weeks since Valentine's Day? That's when this list was supposed to go up. Well, I'm lazy, so
I'm just getting around to it now. That's what you get when only one person that works on this site knows HTML. Anyways, we
figured this would be cool for V-day because not everyone is happy-touchy-feely, but also because not everyone is a bitter
angry asshole. So we have two lists; one for love songs (written by me) and one for break-up/out-of-love songs (written
by Ken) We tried to choose modern songs because, well for me anyways, picking love songs from the sixties would have been too easy.
So, even though they're two weeks late, you can still enjoy these tunes. People break up and get together and fall in love
all the time, right?
Kevin's Top 10 Love Songs
10. Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
I don't care if James Hetfield says it's a break-up song, it sounds more like a love song to me.
The only one Metallica's ever written...
9. Learning How to Smile - Everclear
The point in the song where Art Alexakis sings "You know I live for the day / When you say
'Baby let's just run away" makes me melt every time I hear it.
8. Why Ask Why - Spirit Creek
These lines are some of the best ones of 2001: "So he says "Will you love me for the rest of my life?" ... Boldly she uprose and lifted her head up high
"No I won't love you the rest of yours, I will love you the rest of mine" and all that from an unsigned Milwaukee band.
7. Stand Inside Your Love - Smashing Pumpkins
The first of two SP songs in this list, Stand Inside Your Love wasn't nearly as well-known as the other, but it has
a warmth all its own.
6. Crash Into Me - Dave Matthews Band
This song is totally about sex, and the story is told in a serious manner (unlike rap songs about bitches and ho's). Enough said.
5. I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever) - Stevie Wonder
I couldn't have everything be modern rock. An excellent number at the end of the High Fidelity soundtrack
4. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Yeah, I know it's about absence. But ask yourself this: Would you even care about the absence if there wasn't love there in the first place?
That's what I thought...
3. Tonight, Tonight - Smashing Pumpkins
I put this ahead of Pink Floyd because 1. This is supposed to be a more modern list, dammit! and 2. This song is clearly about love. It's catchy and wonderful,
and the lyrics are awesome. I'm not going to list a few lines here because that would be an injustice to the song.
2. Love - John Lennon
This one is a no-brainer. ""Love is free, free is love / Love is living, living love / Love is needing to be loved"
Do love songs need to be complicated to be good? I think not.
1. Something - The Beatles
It should've have been obvious to you that I would pick a Beatles song to be #1 (well, if you know me anyways). There
are tons of them, ranging from the cutesy boyfriend/girlfriend thing to the deeper tones of "Something." It was written by
George Harrison... go figure.
Ken's Top 10 Out-Of-Love Songs
10. Time Of Your Life - Green Day
"Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road"
This is just a classic case of a mellow song with a very angry
message given in it.
9. Cryin'- Aerosmith
"All I want is someone I can't resist
I know all I need to know by the way
That I got kissed"
This, sadly, reminds me of a horrible trial in my life,
that I still at times have trouble dealing with.
8. Breakdown - Tantric
"In your life, you seemed to have control
You seemed to have it all,
but deep within your soul, your losing it"
This is a failing relationship song, you know?
It's saying, you're losing your love.
7. 1000 Times Goodbye - Megadeth
"Let me put pennies on your eyes,
and kiss your lips one last goodbye,
my love 1000 times goodbye"
While Breakdown is a song that can be taken different ways,
this song can be only taken one way. It's a song about a girl
falling out of love and falling for another. Not really much
symbolism here.
6. Blue Monday - Orgy
"How does it feel,
to treat me like you do."
Yet another case of us poor guys getting jerked
around by you cold-hearted evil women.... :P
5. Cemetary Gates - Pantera
"Through all those complex years,
I thought I was alone..."
This song, to me, sounds like someone
reflecting on a love that he lost. How
great is it was to be with her and such.
4. Don't Cry - Guns N Roses
"Don't cry tonight,
there's a heaven above you baby...."
This is a pathetic attempt from one person to
console another after a breakup.
3. What Do I Have To Do - Stabbing Westward
"What do I have to do...
To make you happy...
What do I have to do...
To make you understand"
This is a situation, trying to please someone that can't be pleased.
2. Can't Forgive, Can't Forget - Blink 182
"I'm sick, of always hearing
all those sad songs, on the radio"
This is dis-enchantment at its best. I can totally relate
to this song on every level.
1. Die, Die My Darling - Metallica
"Your futures in an oblong box"
This is fantasy brought to somewhat of reality.
This is for that bitch who fucked you over.
