Cool?

In the newest edition of Guitar World magazine (w/ Geroge Harrison on the cover ) there is a very interesting section called "Ice Pickin' the GW Cool List." Now if you are gonna ask guitar players whats cool and what isn't, they pretty much asked the right people. Ranging from guitar gods like Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) and Kirk Hammett (Metallica) to some of the young up and comers like Daron Malakian (System of a Down) and Chad Kroeger and Ryan Peake (Nickleback). Now what did they have to say? Well.........

Some of it was intelligent...

Joe Schaffer (Iced Earth) What's Uncool: "Rap metal, These two forms of music are like mixing water and oil."

Some wasn't...

Brad Delson (Linkin Park) Coolest thing about your band: "We're all homies!"

Some of it was interesting...

Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) Cool Current Album: "Jimmy Eat World-Bleed American"

and some were just sickening...

Kerry King (Slayer) Cool Current Album: "Slayer God Hates Us All", Cool Classic Album: "Slayer Reign In Blood", Cool Guitar Riff: "Angel Of Death......" GUESS WHO ITS BUY?? That's right that pompus asshole picked his own riff. Have you ever heard such a shitty guitarist who is so full of himself?

As far as the rest? Well, a lot of the younger acts liked the Montly Crue (gags) Behind The Music. The guys from Nickleback seemed, to me at least, to be very VERY influenced by old thrash metal....

Cool Guitar Riff: (Chad) Disposeable Heroes-Metallica, (Ryan) Wake Up Dead-Megadeth. And they both chose the Metallica BTM as their favorite. But where is this metal influence? It certainly isn't coming out in the music that I hear. If I have to hear "How You Remind Me" one more time, I'm going to take a sledge hammer to my radio!

Other highlights in the magazine are the cover story on Geroge Harrison, the first interview with Metallica ex-bassist Jason Newstead, and the guitar lesson w/ Billie Joe Armstrong. To me the magazine seemed to portray Harrison as a very humble and passed over Beatle. Whether he is or not is a matter of conjecture. Billie Joe Armstrong went through a few of his more popular songs like Logview and Brain Stew. Jason was talking about his new band Echobrain and his decision to leave the biggest band in the world. The impression that I got was that Jason and James were butting heads and it got too intense. That coupled with Jason's spinal chord injuruy was enough to knock him out of Metallica. Once again Guitar World doesn't dissapoint, I can't wait to get the next issue!
