November 20th, 2001 by Kevin Counter-strike: Breeding ground for stupidity

I'm going to make some observations about the online multi-player game, Counter-strike. It's really not a bad game. I have a lot of fun playing it, even though I suck royal ass at the game. But there are some things that just piss me off! I know a lot of other sites out there have made fun of the whole gaming experience, or embraced it, or whatever, so what I'm covering isn't any newer than anything else out there. Here are some things I noticed:

This just bugs the hell out of me. You go into a server, hoping to have some fun, and you get a bunch of fucking babies. Cheating is obviously a problem on the servers, it takes all the fun out of the game. But it seems that when someone is doing real good, or is just plain lucky, they think they're cheating. "Kurt Cobain, your a fag!" I hear sometimes (I go by the name [DRS]Kurt Cobain sometimes), after I get a lucky headshot. Meanwhile my score is 4 kills and 12 deaths, while this guy's is 15-3 or something. All of the sudden, there's a vote to whether or not I should be kicked. What the fuck? Haven't you ever heard of a lucky shot before? My score sucks too much for me to be cheating. Get a goddamn clue!

I also notice that when the bigshots aren't accusing people of cheating, they're bitching that they died. It's never their fault, of course. It's always luck, or lag, or something to that effect. Everytime they die, it's "NOOO!!!! BS!!!!!!!" or "OMFG I GOT KILLED BY A N00B!!!" I won't name any names (many are admins) 'cause they're probably l33t haX0rS like JEFFK or something, and they'll try and fuck my computer up or something. Take your deaths like a man, script kiddies, or stop playing!

Another thing I love is when people bitch about stealing their kills. But the same person would go and complain, if they got killed, that you didn't back them up. Such hypocrites. Are you more concerned with your petty score (that doesn't mean anything outside of the internet) or would you rather live to play the round a little longer? Stupid people...

I've been giving single players of the game a hard time, now let's move on to groups, and more specifically clans. Clans, at their roots, aren't a bad thing. I see them as a group of people who like to play together, who help each other out in the game, etc. But they take it too far in CS. There's recruiting and scouting and practices and other crap. Practice? A video game? What the fuck? I heard someone on a game I was playing talking about his clan not doing "clan-like things" What could those things be? Planning out strategies? Going to a LAN party together (very lame idea, in my mind... but I'm not a computer-type person so don't listen to me)? When I played for the first time last year, I sucked balls at the game (and I still do!) but my friends, who intoduced me to the game, let me in the clan anyways. There was no scouting, there was no probationary period. You know what our "clan-like things" were? We got together and drank beer and watched movies. Not because we were in a shitty CS clan (we weren't well respected at first), but because we were friends. For that, I think, we were the most-liked clan on campus. The other players knew we didn't take ourselves too seriously, that we were just having fun, which is the whole point of the game. We had a few good players, and a whole lot of average-to-mediocre ones, but we still had a good time. Unlike that shitty [oRo] clan...

Lastly, I'll talk about the CS chat room you can connect to while in the game. I talked about Internet chat rooms (aol specifically) back in June on Digital Lunacy. I hate them with a passion. It was really an accident that I got into this particular chat room. I was sorry I ever came in. All you saw was this:
