Top Ten Singles of 2001

There were literally hundreds and hundreds of singles released in 2001. Somehow, someway, we managed to narrow it down to our ten favorites. There were no real criteria other than it had to be released in 2001, and it had to be some form of rock music.

Kevin's Top Ten

10. "Stupid Kid" - Alkaline Trio
Album: From Here To Infirmary
This song got play on MTV2 and was also used in the episode of some shitty show on MTV. How can you not appreciate a great lyric such as "Why is it that you had to say / Goodbye in your special way / You slashed the tires on my car"?

9. "Sing" - Travis
Album: The Invisible Band
This song makes good bedtime music.

8. "Hash Pipe" - Weezer
Album: Weezer
Weezer's triumphant return to geek-rock stardom features this track that isn't about smoking hashish, but apparently about a transvestite. Very interesting...

7. "Days of the Week" - Stone Temple Pilots
Album: Shangri La-de-da
I have a soft spot for for catchy, guitar-driven pop songs. Too bad the rest of the album kinda blows.

6. "Fat Lip" - Sum 41
Album: All Killer No Filler
You gotta love songs that mention mullets and Iron Maiden, and lead singer Deryck Whibley rhymes "distortion" with "abortion" These guys bring a sense of humor to their music and can fuse different genres (rap, metal, etc.) into nice little 2 and a half minute energetic pop-punk nuggets.

5. "Knives Out" - Radiohead
Album: Amnesiac
One of the best cuts from the lastest ablum by the Pink Floyd of our generation. It's the only one on the album that even closely resembles a rock song.

4. "Waiting" - Green Day
Album: Warning
Green day all grown up? You're kidding, right? Just listen to the lyrics, and you'll know what I mean.

3. "Stay Together For The Kids" - Blink 182
Album: Take Off Your Pants And Jacket
An oddly serious tune from the boys in Blink. "If a stupid poem could fix this home / I'd read it every day" sings Mark Hoppus. If they wrote lyrics this emotional combined with the lyrics from their debut album Cheshire Cat, they'd be one of the best pop-punk bands ever.

2. "Chop Suey!" - System of a Down
Album: Toxicity
"Chop Suey!" just makes me wanna go nuts in the mosh pits. The quiet/loud dynamic between the choruses and verses works really well here.

1. "Life" - Our Lady Peace / "Schism" - Tool (tie)
Album: Spiritual Machines / Lateralus
I really couldn't decide between the two. "Life" has some of the most uplifting lyrics I've heard in alt-rock in a long time, and it's sung with an emotion other than anger, which seems to dominate the airwaves today. "Schism" was Tool's first single in over 5 years, and it certainly didn't disappoint with it's complex guitar work and thundering drums. Of course, it had the trademark fucked-up video to go along with it.

Indie Singles Too Cool To Miss

I work at a college radio station, so here's some of the stuff that we play that I think deserves some time in the sun with the mainstream music.

The Strokes - "Is This It?" from Is This It
A lot of hype surrounded this band when the album came out, and I expect to see big things from this small rock act.

Mad Capsule Markets - "Pulse" from Oscillator In Distortion
Japanese techno punk death metal. Don't ask me how they do it, they just do. This track has old-school punk vocals and trademark heavy guitars. Other cuts from the album have huge riffs that battle with the techno beats, all with death metal's talentless growl.

Saves The Day - "At You Funeral" from Stay What You Are These guys were just on Conan O'Brien not to long ago, and they have a video on MTV2. One day, emo will be pushed into the mainstream, and Saves The Day are just the band to do it.

Ken's Top Ten

10. "The Rock Show" - Blink 182
Album: Take Off Your Pants And Jacket
Everyone needs a little mindless fun in their lives, so why not pick a band of goof-offs like Blink 182?
9. Gets Me Through - Ozzy Osbourne
Album: Gets Me Through
It took forever for him to release a new song, but it was well worth the wait. The lyrics are a bit trite but what do you expect, HES FUCKING OZZY!
8.. Breakdown - Tantric
Album: Tantric
This is just one of those songs that has a teen relation thing going on, you know what I mean don't ya?
7. Hemorage In My Hands - Fuel
Album: Something Like Human

This song is just plain sad. But I like it. Not many songs can nearly bring me to tears, but this is one of them.
6. Down With The Sickness - Disturbed
Album: The Sickness

This just gets my adrenaline fucking going.
5. Bombhell - Powerman 5000
Album: Anyone For Doomsday?

This is just another one of those songs that gets you jacked the fuck up.
4. Schism - Tool
Abum: Lateralus

A very tripped out song with an even more fucked up video. Tool never fails to amaze me, especailly Danny Carey, he's fucking amazing.
3. Weathered - Creed
Album: Weathered

This is a song that I feel was written for me. The lyrics are just so telling of my life its fucking shocking. If you want to see the lyrics, take a look at my review of the cd and see what I mean.
2. Call The Rain - Spirit Creek
Album: Call The Rain EP

One of the most universal songs I've ever heard. It may be a personal song, but I bet almost all people around my age can relate to.
1. Motopsycho - Megadeth
Album: World Needs A Hero

It had been many years since Megadeth got done with their exparimental phase. It wasn't bad, but I think it's good that they are going back to their roots.
